Griffith, Paddy. "That Most Vulnerable, and, At the Same Time, Most Mortal Part"
Divergence: 1796 CE
What if: Admiral Sir John Jervis died in December 1796 and was not alive to command the British
fleet the following year at Cape St. Vincent. A few days later, General Louis-Lazare Hoche
was able to successfully rendezvous with his troops for the invasion of Ireland.
Summary: A detailing of the French invasion of Ireland, which the British are unable to
adequately reinforce. That and the French fleet's dominance of Britain's commercial routes
leads to the creation of a free Irish republic and promotes a more stable democracy back in
France.
